Autumn in Munich!

It’s peak autumn foliage season here. This year, many trees have turned color at once — the whole city is glowing yellow, orange, and red. It’s absolutely beautiful.

In mid-October, I held two talk events.

The first was part of the “Opera at the Temple” event at Kōkyōji Temple in Toyama Prefecture.In the second part of that event, I participated in an online dialogue with the young Tokyo-based opera director Kaoru Itō, discussing the future of opera.It was fascinating to hear about community opera in Japan, and I was honored to speak about my own field — experiential opera.There are even talks about creating a new, large-scale opera project together at this temple in about five years — something to keep an eye on!

The second talk was organized by the Japan-Germany Association in Munich.The topic: “Why does classical music move the human heart?”I gave a lecture from a musical-theoretical perspective — about pitch, harmony, rhythm, and more.When discussing rhythm, I compared examples from ballroom dance and various languages, explaining the unique rhythmic characteristics of each.

The Q&A afterward was full of energy — we had lively discussions about the differences in music education between Japan and Germany.Interestingly, many Germans actually dislike classical music. Why? Because school music classes often focus heavily on theory, with little practical singing or ensemble work.In that sense, Japanese school music classes might be more fulfilling.

After the lecture, one German participant told me:

“That was so interesting! If I’d had fun lessons like this as a child, I would have understood the joy of music much earlier. I used to be allergic to music theory!”

The talk was so well-received that I plan to turn it into a YouTube video.It includes 50 slides — I’m putting a lot of effort into it!In the latter half, I talk quite a bit about rhythm and dance. After all, ballroom dance is music expressed through the body!Even during orchestra rehearsals, I sometimes find myself dancing on the podium to explain rhythm — haha!

I’d love for everyone to see this video.It’s about my deep love for classical music — explaining music theory in simple terms, and passionately discussing why classical music still matters today.

Let’s Go to the Ball! – Shall We Dance!

(Early-bird first stage ended September 30)

This special annual program combines a ballroom dance class (held bilingually in Japanese and German) with a formal ball — a truly unique experience!Following the success of last year and this February’s event, this will be our third time.

The dance classes will take place every Sunday in January 2026 (three sessions), and the ball will be on January 30.The second early-bird discount runs until October 31 (Friday)!

Musical Theatre “Peter and the Wolf” – Performance in February!

A co-production with Opera Pomme Rouge — we’re looking for backstage team members!(costume, props, etc.)

We’ll be presenting Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf on February 8,together with orchestra, actors, and acrobatic artists — a theatre-style performance.

We’re currently looking for:

 紅葉真っ只中のミュンヘンです！今年は例年よりも、色んな木が一斉に色づいて、町中黄色にオレンジに赤に、街が色づいて本当に綺麗です。

10月中旬に、２回、お話会をさせていただきました。一つ目は富山県にある光教寺で開催された「お寺でopera」というイベントの第二部に、東京でまだ若くして演出家をされている伊藤薫先生とのオンライン対談という形で、オペラの今後のあり方についてお話ししました。日本の市民オペラのお話を聞けたのもとても興味深かったし、私が得意とする「体験型オペラ」のお話もさせていただき光栄でした。このお寺さんと、5年後くらいに大きな創作オペラの話も浮上しております。まだまだ目が離せません！

二つ目のお話会は、ミュンヘンの、日独協会主催のイベントでした。ここでは「どうしてクラシック音楽が人の心に響くのか」について、音楽理論的な面から（音の高さの話、和声の話、リズムの話など）講義をさせていただきました。リズムについては、社交ダンスや各言語を例に出して、その特性の違いなどをお話ししました。公演の後半は質疑応答で、とってもたくさんの活発な話が進みました。ドイツ人の方達と日本の方達と、小中学校での音楽教育の違いなんかも離せてとっても面白かったです。ドイツ人で、クラシック嫌いの人が実はとっても多いんです。なぜなら、合唱や合奏の実技があまりなく、ほとんど音楽理論だからだそう。日本人の方が、そういった意味では学校での音楽の授業は充実しているかもしれません。講演後ドイツ人の参加者から「すごく面白かった、こういう楽しい授業を子供の頃に受けていたら音楽の楽しみがもっと早くに理解できただろうに。僕はこれまで音楽理論にアレルギーがあった。」という感想もいただきました。とっても人気だったので、この内容をYouTube動画にしてあげようと思っています。何しろスライド５０枚ですからねー。気合い入っていますよ！後半はリズムからダンスの話も結構します。社交ダンスって、音楽を体で表現することなんだな！コレが！音楽の説明に切っても切り離せない。私はオーケストラのリハーサルでも、時々音楽のリズムを説明するのに敷台の上で踊り出しますよー。笑。　この動画、皆さんにもみてもらいたい！私が心から愛しているクラシック音楽。音楽理論をわかりやすーく噛み砕き説明しつつ、どうして今クラシック音楽を聴く必要があるのか！について、あつーく語ります。
